The passing of a friend

Published by didj under General

Roofus

I am sorry to say that sometime during my last trip to Louisinana, my roomate, pet and friend, a Male Betta named Roofus, passed away. Roofus was a really good fishie, and he will be terribly missed.

Roofus was fond of my singing (perhaps the only one this earth who was) - I would sing him the “Breakfast Time” song and the “Dinner Time for Roofy-Doof” song when I would feed him. He also liked swimming and blowing bubbles, and especially liked to eat freeze dried blood worms as a treat.

I originally thought that his automated feeder had malfunctioned while I was away on business - but it seems to be in perfect working order now… so I am not entirely sure what the cause may have been. While I am not sure of his actual age, Roofus lived with me for 1.5 years.

In leiu of sending flowers, please take a brief moment to smile, and reflect upon how precious and yet precarious life really is.

New Photo Equipment!

Published by didj under General

D200 & Nikkor 85mm 1.4

I was really really really close to getting myself a brand new Macintosh computer. But when push comes to shove, my current computer gets used for Photos and not much else… and it is doing quite a fine job with those photos. Plus, I spend about 3 or 4 days home a month lately. “Why not spend that computer budget on Photography equipment?” I asked myself. Not even I was prepared for the answer. “OKAY!” I said to myself. So I did.
I have been drooling over this lens for about two years now, and got a chance to do some shooting with it at Ryan and Stacey’s wedding in Hawaii. Now I have plenty of time to work with it. As for the Body - the D200 is a giant leap in technology for me. It is an amazing body for the price. The vertical grip that I added… that was mainly for my ego, but also extends battery life (two batteries rather than one) and also makes the camera a bit more substantial for gripping.
I am looking forward to the next couple of months as I familiarize myself with this new equipment. I am really pushing towards taking more candids and street portraits - that is what this gear is all about. I have always found it hard to approach folks about having their picture taken… getting over that fear is my nect step in getting to where I want to be as a photog.
